How to sell a collection to a card shop

  1. Know what you have. Sort by game and set, then pull out the cards that look valuable. Look up recent sold prices for those cards, not asking prices. That gives you a fair baseline before anyone makes an offer.
  2. Bring your cards sorted. Keep your best cards in sleeves or toploaders, and keep bulk separate. A shop can make a faster, clearer offer on a sorted stack than on a loose shoebox.
  3. Expect less than market value in cash. Shops usually pay a share of market value for cash, and more if you take store credit. They need room to resell the card. If you play or collect, credit can be the better deal.
  4. Get more than one offer. Shops focus on different games and need different cards. The same binder can get very different offers across town.
  5. Call ahead for a big collection. Ask when the buyer is in, whether they are buying your game right now, and if they need a photo ID. Some shops set times for large buys.

Questions about selling cards

How much will a card shop pay for my cards?
Shops usually pay a share of what a card sells for, because they have to resell it and cover rent and staff. Expect a cash offer below market value, and a higher offer if you take store credit. Ask for both numbers.
Do card shops buy Pokémon and sports cards?
Many do, but not every shop buys every game. Of the 1,221 shops listed here as buyers, 1,108 carry Pokémon, 569 carry sports cards and 684 carry Magic: The Gathering. Call ahead and ask whether they are buying your game right now.
How do you know a shop buys cards?
A shop is listed as a buyer only when its customers' reviews or its own website say it buys cards. The proof is shown under each shop.
